Burgundy is justly famous for its world class Chardonnay whites and Pinot Noir reds. The best white examples from Chablis and the villages of the Cote de Beaune are some of the most sought after wines in the world. Limited supply and high demand has led to stratospheric prices. Further south in the Cote Chalonnaise villages of Rully, Givry and Mercurey there are still real finds to be made. Elegant Chardonnays with the buttery, nutty, oatmealy flavours of great white Burgundy but at much more reasonable prices. The wines of the Maconnais have their own style: riper and more rustic but still capable of finesse and complexity in the better villages around Saint-Véran and Fuissé. Reds are at their best in the Cote de Nuits and Cotes de Beaune although some very good red wines are being made as far north as the Cotes d'Auxerre near Chablis particulalry in warmer vintages.
